Want to Start Working in the UK? 5 Days to Build from Scratch Now!

Hello, and welcome back to the next issue of The Dartboard Digest! In today's issue, we have valuable insights for those who have never worked in the UK, or perhaps, never sent their CV anywhere.

But let's not forget about those who landed a job! Are you sure you have caught up with your peers? If not, scroll down to the check-and-done section; we have a special mission for you today!

Imagine this:

You're sitting at your laptop, determined to start applying for jobs today. Naturally, you feel a sense of worry. After all, while you're still studying, all your friends are already working part-time. However, as the days pass, you begin to feel overwhelmed and confused. The first challenge you face is creating an impressive CV. Countless templates leave you unsure about which one is the right fit. Seeking help, you turn to online advice, which suggests starting your CV from the job description. With hundreds of job sites and numerous requirements to navigate, the task becomes increasingly daunting. Moreover, it seems like everyone has a LinkedIn profile. Should you build one too? So now, you are left pondering which step to take first and where to begin. And in the end, feeling overwhelmed, you close your laptop without having accomplished anything (sad).

If this sounds like you, then you are not alone. We've got your back! We're here to break down the job-hunting process into manageable steps (and let's hope this is the only guide you will ever need to bookmark to make your first step easier). Remember, this is a long journey, so take a deep breath, and let's kickstart with Day 1 on our roadmap below:

Day 1: Get your CV done!

Follow the one and only template we provide. Fill in the details and stay true to yourself. No need for tips and tricks—just be genuine. No matter what, make sure to complete it! There's no need to obsess over every word, as we all know we'll have to come back and revise this CV many more times ;)

Day 2: Familiarise yourself with LinkedIn Job Board

Play around with the filters, such as experience levels, salary, onsite/remote options, and more. Browse until you feel bored, and read the first thing that catches your attention. Don't let those job descriptions scare you; nobody can meet all the requirements listed. Instead, think of job descriptions as a wishlist for HR rather than rigid criteria. However, make sure to save 5 jobs until the end, as we will need them for the next couple of days.

Day 3: Fill in the Knowledge Gaps

Look for an online course from any platform you prefer, and click the Enrol button. If you're unsure, you can try the link below. Allocate dedicated time in your schedule and commit to it.

Day 4: Creating Your LinkedIn Profile

It's time to create your LinkedIn account and connect with your peers. But hold on, let's go back to tailoring your CV first. Now that you have familiarised yourself with the job requirements, try to incorporate those elements into your CV using the template we provided earlier. Once you're satisfied with the result, make it your LinkedIn profile. Keep in mind that this task may be tedious and time-consuming, so taking more than one day to complete is perfectly fine. Remember, work at your own pace!

That's it for now, but here's an important notice (don't worry, I don't want to overwhelm you): LinkedIn and your CV are not the same!

Day 5: Start applying for your first job!

I know it may not make sense at this point, as you might be wondering about interview preparation and other related tasks. However, trust me when I say that it's unlikely they will reach out to you immediately. Consider this as a gentle push to motivate you to take action rather than remain idle. Interviews and cover letters can be tackled after submitting your applications, as you still have a long journey ahead, going through this 5-day process again and again.

And that's just the beginning! There's still more to explore, including cold messaging, company research, networking, E-portfolio, and acquiring the necessary skills mentioned in job descriptions. It may seem like an endless endeavour but don't fret. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a successful job search. Take it at your own pace, and remember to celebrate the small wins along the way!
