How I land my job and continue my study with trial and error method (Pt.1)

London is looking better and better now, with the sunny sky and the blossom season just everywhere! (Although there will be that week with heavy rain and gloomy sky that drags you down). But yes, spring is finally here!! With all the new winds, new changes, and liveliness. And so is my life; it is only March, but I am celebrating so many new winds in my life 😊 And I am so grateful for it; looking back, I see who I am now thanks to so much support and guidance I received.

Just imagine how lost I would be without my family, mentor, friend, partner, and colleagues... If I were to live here in the UK on my own, it would make me shiver by now. That's why today's blog is dedicated to those who feel lost, anxious, and afraid amidst uncertainty and the challenge of finding a job. Perhaps you can learn something from my job application journey. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the post. I would be more than happy to help, schedule a call, coffee chat, or hang out. If you've stumbled upon this post, it means our stories should be shared and heard, and I am excited to learn from you as well.

1. All about job

Rather than follow the timeline of how I apply for a job, today we will look into my Notion job system, starting from my master file: 'ALL ABOUT JOB,' for a clearer view and detailed explanation.

However, mental preparation and self-assessment are essential before finding a job. This can be achieved through extensive research. Find your motivation and set OKRs. (I will write it in another blog so look out!)

Plan

I begin by creating a PLAN. Everything you do requires a plan to follow. Here, I have two files:

  • Landing a job route: a long-term plan to continue my growth to match market needs. This plan will be ongoing for years, perhaps best outlined over 5 years.

  • 6-month landing a job plan: as the name suggests, a short-term plan requiring dedication and adherence (which I've struggled with due to excessive ambition and lack of realism and time commitment).

However, don't be disheartened if you can't stick to the plan; life is unpredictable, and your boat may not always sail smoothly. Be flexible and allow yourself time to rest. :)

Research is the backbone of planning

To support my plan, thorough research is a must and a never-ending process.

  • Analyse the job application months from the page.

  • Before you dip your toes in, you need to know the difference between a Graduate Scheme, entry-level position, internship, and other alternative ways to find a job.

  • Tester and Data are fields I want to explore, so I am researching both of them. If you are unsure of your goal, you can always create a folder for it with general information, come back and add more data in the future.

  • Mentoring bubble (link here).

  • Motivation and reasons (mood board, personal growth chart, ideal image,…).

Tracker

After having a clear plan, you will need to break it down into bits and pieces. You will be surprised by how many times your plan needs to be changed or refined along the way - don't be too rigid and open to new ideas. Also, please remember to turn your Tracker into something you can celebrate your small wins.

It should come in an easy view to spot out slack off - the timeline view works well in this case. And checklist gives you a cleaner view of Done and Not Completed.

Part 2 will probably go into details of each section :) I hope I will have the chance to share some of the Notion templates.
